Owen Wilsondoes not have the greatest track record when it comes to getting it right withRotten Tomatoescritics, and it seems like his latest movie,Paint, has failed to improve on that. Despite having appeared in some big movies likeWedding Crashers, the actor has generally played the same kind of character in most of his movies and it didn’t take long for his tried and tested routine to become tired and jaded for many.
In his latest venture, Owen Wilson plays a Bob Ross styled public access host called Carl Nargle, who encourages his viewers to embrace their artistic talents and paint nature scenes even if they really have no talent for the medium. After being replaced be an artist named Ambrosia, played by Ciara Renee, he starts to wonder what his life is all about.

Paintseems to have managed to miss the mark on all counts though, with the character’s parody of iconic Ross not been seen as funny by many, and the journey of self-discovery that the character undergoes just not garnering much in the way of sympathy or real interest from audiences. The movie is currently sitting on a 31% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences have been only slightly kinder. The biggest issue with the movie seems to be that is sits very uneasily as a comedy drama that is too much of one to work as the other.
While preparing for the role, it seems that as a consolation Wilson did at least get the chance to do some painting classes in real life while preparing for his role. He recently said: “My two boys joined in and we took a class, and then David Arquette, actually, I went over to his house one day [and] he had even gone to Florida to take Bob Ross [Art Workshop classes]. We worked on some paintings.” It is just a shame that the preparation didn’t quite lead to a better result on screen.
