The new year is kicking off with all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s award season in a big way this weekend. The 76th annualGolden Globesare happening on Sunday, January 6th. The big event will be presented by first time hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg. The Golden Globes are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The organization consists of 90 journalists from 55 countries, with a readership of 250 million people. The Golden Globes is a riskier affair than the buttoned-up Oscars. Celebrities, nominees, and industry professionals sit, drink, and are sometimes mercilessly lampooned by the hosts. Who can forget Ricky Gervais' acid tongue or the biting sarcasm of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
The2019 Golden Globes Awardshas some big TV shows competing for the coveted prize. I’ll break down each TV category by the expected winner, and who should win. It’s pure conjecture who will actually win, but I will measure the expected winners by their percentages from goldderby.com, a website that tallies the choices from industry experts and critics.
11Best Television Series - Drama
Winner:Killing Eve, looks to have the top spot for the majority of TV experts. I thought the show was very good, but waned by season’s end. My choice would be the absolutely riveting Bodyguard, the best binge watch series of the year.
10Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama
Winner: Sandra Oh inKilling Eve, will have to pause her hosting duties and accept this award. I’ve been a fan of her’s for years. She’s had a long career and deserves to win.
9Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama
Winner:Matthew Rhys, the experts favorite for his final season inThe Americans. My choice would be Richard Madden. He kicks so much ass inBodyguard. I sincerely hope he gets the upset.
8Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy
Winner:It has to beThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the critical darling continues to rack up awards. The show is good, but I would choose HBO’s Barry or NBC’s The Good Place. Both series are edgy, and filled with clever, sophisticated humor.
7Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
Winner:Rachel Brosnahan inThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, looks to repeat as a Golden Globe winner. She won the Emmy and is beloved by television critics. My choice would be Kristen Bell. The Good Place is a unique show on multiple fronts. It may be too philosophical for some, but I find it hilarious.
6Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
Winner:Bill Hader, he will continue the streak from the Emmys for his work inBarry. The critics love Michael Douglas forThe Kominsky Method, but I think the HFPA will reward youth. Hader’s hitman turned acting student was one of the best surprises last year.
5Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner:All bets are onThe Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the clear favorite of TV critics. Honestly, I never saw it, so can’t judge this category. That said,Sharp ObjectsandEscape at Dannemorawere both excellent. .
4Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner:Amy Adams, who’s brilliant in Sharp Objects. She’s got the majority of critical support. I also thought Laura Dern was very good inThe Tale, a highly disturbing movie.
3Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner: Darren Criss forAmerican Crime Story, the favorite of TV critics. Again, I didn’t see The Assassination of Gianni Versace. The others players in this category are formidable. Hugh Grant has a lot of critical support as well for his work inA Very English Scandal.
2Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Winner: Patricia Clarkson inSharp Objects, she’s won a bevy of awards in her career and should win here. No arguments from me, she and Amy Adams are amazing inSharp Objects.
