Prime Video’sRoad Housereboot was a major success for the streaming platform, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a retired UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer in the Florida Keys. The 2024 film was Prime Video’s most-watched movie debut to date, as audiences were obsessed with the new take on the Patrick Swayze-led action cult classic. Thanks to its tremendous success, a sequel was quickly greenlit andRoad House 2has finally gotten an update, thanks to one of its (potentially) returning stars.
During an interview withVariety,Lukas Gagerevealed that development has begun onRoad House 2. Gage played Billy inRoad House, who worked at the Floridian roadhouse that employed Dalton, and the pair quickly became friends. Gage isn’t confirmed to star in the sequel —only Jake Gyllenhaal has been officially cast so far— but the actor hopes he will return. As forRoad House 2’slack of updates, it stems from Gyllenhaal’s busy schedule, including working on M. Night Shyamalan’s latest untitled film. Gage said:

“Yeah. I think they’re in the really early stages of it, and Jake has been super busy with being a Broadway star and figuring out his schedule with the M. Night Shyamalan movie, but it’s for sure happening. It’s in early stages right now.”
While Gage isn’t confirmed to return forRoad House 2, considering his character’s friendship with Dalton, he hopes Billy will appear in the sequel.“I didn’t die,“the actor joked about his chances of returning for the second installment.“So I think that there’s hope for me.“Gage is also desperate to work with director Doug Liman and Gyllenhaal again on the sequel, outlining his love of their past works:

“I loved working with Doug Liman and then obviously to work with Jake Gyllenhaal, someone I grew up just admiring and rehearsing Donnie Darko in my room as an 11-year-old and wanting to be him.”
The 2024Road Housereboot had a lot going for it, including the talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, Doug Liman, and Lukas Gage, and the notoriety of former UFC champion, Conor McGregor, as the movie’s villain, Knox. Despite its popularity, the film was a middling hit with critics, earning a 60% rating onRotten Tomatoes, and was even more divisive among audiences, with a score of 52%.
Road House Director Makes Shocking Claim About Revenues from Prime Video Hit
Doug Liman, who directed the Road House remake, has been vocal about his displeasure with Prime Video’s exclusive streaming release of the film.
The biggest point of controversy was the fight sequences. The director opted to use a new technique where each fight was shot four times, swapping the actors for pads in between takes, with the takes blended together using CGI during the edit. The result was supposed to make it look like the actors were really being hit. However, audiences instantly noticed there was something wrong withRoad House’s action. Despite the backlash,Liman has defended the technique, even saying he can’t go back to the old way of shooting action scenes. Many are still hopingRoad House 2will either lose the divisive action style, or fix its visual flaws.
