Quentin Tarantinohas always been pretty outspoken when it comes to his views on the world of Hollywood he works in, and in his latest interview it wasNetflixand other streaming only platforms that gained a scathing remark from the iconic director. While discussing his upcoming final directorial effort,The Movie Critic, Tarantino shares his belief that streaming movies, including those from the likes of Ryan Reynolds, don’t exist as far as he is concerned because no-one knows they are there. Speaking withDeadline, he said:
“I like the idea of giving it my all for 30 years and then saying, ‘OK, that’s enough.’ And I don’t like working to diminishing returns. And I mean, now is a good time because I mean, what even is a motion picture anyway anymore? Is it just something that they show on Apple? That would be diminishing returns.

I mean, and I’m not picking on anybody, but apparently for Netflix, Ryan Reynolds has made $50 million on this movie and $50 million on that movie and $50 million on the next movie for them. I don’t know what any of those movies are. I’ve never seen them. Have you? I haven’t ever talked to Ryan Reynolds’ agent, but his agent is like, “Well, it cost $50 million.” Well, good for him that he’s making so much money. But those movies don’t exist in the zeitgeist. It’s almost like they don’t even exist.”
Of course,Ryan Reynolds currently has a big-money dealwith Netflix and that has so far supplied huge hits such asThe Adam ProjectandRed Notice, and in fact all of his releases with the streamer have landed in the top 10 of all time on the platform. It seems that while there are plenty of people who have the same opinion as Tarantino, it is hard to deny that streaming movies are capable of being the same quality and gaining the same kind of success as any theatrical release.

Quentin Tarantino has made it perfectly clear that the big boom in the streaming market is something that has not exactly influenced his decision to make his tenth movie his last, it has certainly made him believe that it is the right time for him to step away from working behind the camera. Despite that, Tarantino has not ruled out possibly dipping his toe into TV work in future. When asked about whether this was his last project, he replied:
“No, I could do a TV show. I didn’t say I’m going to go into the night darkly, all right? I could do a TV show. I could do a short film. I could do a play. All kinds of things I could do, but I’ll probably just be more of a writer.”
So perhapsThe Movie Criticwill be the last time we see Tarantino’s name on a feature length movie, but it certainly doesn’t seem like he is going to drop out of the industry entirely. For his fans, that will at least be some good news as they wait to see whether he can end his directorial career on a high.
