9 Valid Reasons Why Sci-Fi Fans Don’t Like Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon

The man, the myth, the legend, the thorn in the side of sci-fi. Zack Snyder isn’t making any new fans with Rebel Moon, and here’s why.

Hitting Netflix on June 26, 2025,Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fireintroduced fans to a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a village on the moon Veldt. Starring Sofia Boutella as Kora, a former Imperium soldier who goes on a quest to recruit people from all over the galaxy to stand up to the Imperium, the film quickly shot to the top of the Netflix charts despite poor reviews from critics.Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiverwas released four months later to equally poor reviews, but things for Snyder and the series improved a little whenthe two director’s cut versions premiered last August, which got significantly better reviews from critics than their two counterparts.

Gail Simone Was “Smitten” By the Character of Nemesis

Known for her work onBirds of Prey,Batgirl, andDeadpool, Simone was a big fan ofRebel Moonbefore she was asked to come and playin Snyder’s universe. In a statement released to coincide with the news of the comics, she said that she found herself “smitten” by the on-screen presence of Nemesis, and that it was “fate” that allowed her to write the new series:

“I feel like this story was a little bit destined to happen, somehow. My family and I were watching Rebel Moon and really enjoying it, and I just immediately focused on Nemesis. I loved the badassery of her, but also the way she addressed grief, and recognized it in others. I just was completely smitten with her, and I actually said to my family, ‘Man, I would love to write her someday.’

“Well, someone was listening because I get this message that Zack would like to talk to me about writing that exact character. Who am I to argue with fate? She’s a powerful, powerful character, she leaps off the page (and screen) and I cannot even explain how much I enjoyed playing in this sandbox.”

You can see for yourself how Simone and Bertoni were able to capture Nemesis' “badassery” when the first issue ofRebel Moon: Nemesishits shelves on July 16. Until then, you can catch all chapters in the saga streaming now on Netflix.
