The uproariousmusical parody seriesSchmigadoon!at the increasingly popular Apple TV Plus has been renewed for a second season and will see an overhaul of source material as well as the addition of a few new faces!

The show stars Keegan Michael Key ofKey and Peeleand Cecily Strong ofSaturday Night Live, who play a pair of New York City doctors, Josh and Melissa, on a trip to repair their fracturing marriage. They wind up in the mystical, musical town of Schmigadoon, which is, of course, hilariously a direct parody of the Scottish town Brigadoon in the MGM musical of the same name, starring Cyd Charrise and Gene Kelly. When Melissa and Josh find out they are only allowed to leave the town if they discover true love, the couple must look both within their marriage and beyond, to any surroundings and eligible singles, for their ultimate partners so that they can move on from this rhythmic nightmare once and for all.

Schmigadoon Season One

Apple TV Plus has renewed theSchmigadoon!series for a second season, only this time, it will be a parody of thehit musicalChicago. It is unclear if the show will change its name toSchmicago, but we will do so here just to enjoy the absolute brilliance that is this parody series. With the resurgence of 1930s and 1940s-inspired musicals such asThe Return of Mary Poppinsand the controversial crowd favorite musicalLa La Land, this is absolutely the right time to parody musicals. It is fortunate that Apple TV Plus thought so too, and we have this hysterical series that is jam-packed with real-life musical theater and comedic talent to bring it to life.

Here is everything we know and predict aboutSchmigadoon!season 2 and why we are excited to see what’s in store!

Schmigadoon Season 2: The Plot

Thefinale ofSchmigadoon!season 1did not see Melissa and Josh run across the bridge. Though they found true love, their journey is not yet over. We didn’t see them finally leave the town of Schmigadoon and return to their New York City medical lifestyles. This is the territory that season 2 will explore, but through the ’60s and ’70s lens ofChicago.

Josh’s newfound embrace of expression and communication through bursts of song may take center stage in season 2. In real life, the actors got pretty choked up rehearsing and shooting this scene, which warms our hearts and makes us even more excited to see what the performers can do with this material.

Since most of the original cast is returning, perhaps the town of Schmigadoon itself will transform into Schmicago, with the residents taking new forms as different characters whose purpose is to teach visitors important lessons about life and love.

Schmigadoon Season 2: The Cast & Crew

The series concept comes to us from screenwriters Cinco Paul and Ken Dario, who have previously done a lot of work with animation in franchisessuch asDespicable Me.It is executive produced bySaturday Night Live’sLorne Michaels.Schmicagowill immerse itself in the nuances of ’60s and ’70s musicals, as opposed to the ’30s and ’40s inspirations that were hallmarks of season 1.

Interestingly, even though Melissa and Josh will apparently find themselves in a new town mirroring the world of the musicalChicago, the same supporting cast of season 1, which includes many musical theater veterans who have one a slew of awards, such asWest Side Story’sAriana DeBose, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, and Aaron Tveit, is set to return. Unfortunate, Fred Armisen and Liam Quiring-Nkindi were not also announced as returning cast members.

Perhaps movies likeAustin Powerswill influence season 2 as much asChicago, its source material. This genre of ’60s and ’70s musical and musical parody content will probably have different, equally powerful and hilarious lessons to teach Melissa and Josh. This is such a funny, brilliant, and well-time show, and we are so excited to see what these amazing, versatile, and just explosively talented performers can do with these characters.

Some new faces that will be joining the roster arePatrick Page ofThe Gilded AgeandThe Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’sTitus Burgess. Their character identities have not yet been revealed, but there’s sure to be plenty of sing-song fun for these talented actors to join in on.

Release Date

While a release date has not yet been announced, we anticipate filming for the next season will begin later this year. Viewers look forward to more of this delightful musical parody and the surprise continuation of Josh and Melissa’s journey.
