There are only a few months left for the release ofScream 7, and fans still haven’t gotten a first look at the highly anticipated film that will revive thehorrorfranchise, mostly with legacy characters. Details remain under wraps, of course, and while directorKevin Williamsonwas responsible for announcing the release date, he has stayed quiet for months. AsScream 7gets tweaked in post-production, Williamson talks about the story’s direction, and playfully teases a premise that hasn’t been approached before. Or has it?

Williamson is currently promoting his latest work,The Waterfront. The TV series represents the director’s official return to the TV medium after a five-year hiatus. He’s responsible for making beloved series likeDawson’s CreekandThe Vampire Diaries, and according to early reviews, Netflix’sThe Waterfrontis another win for Williamson.

‘Scream 7’ Writer Explains Why Upcoming Sequel Had To Be a Sidney Prescott Story

‘Scream 7’ had to tackle a new story after Melissa Barrera was fired, and Jenna Ortega opted not to return for the seventh installment.

While talking to IndieWire aboutThe Waterfront, theScream 7questionswere inevitable. The film is currently in post-production, and though he didn’t mention much, Williamson showed gratitude for the opportunity to direct such an important film for him. He’s credited as co-creator of the franchise, standing beside director Wes Craven as the screenwriter behind the original 1996 film and two of its sequels. The director also teased the plot ofScream 7and went back and forth to intentionally confuse readers:

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream 1996

“Look, we had a blast doing it. It was a wonderful time. I never really left the franchise. I was always there on the sidelines [as an executive producer] throughout it all, and the reason I stepped away was mainly Wes, because I was like, ‘Our time has passed. How can I make a Scream without Wes?’ I wasn’t going to be a part of any of it, and then I realized I didn’t want there to be a Scream made without me, so I stayed involved, and I’m really glad I did. The same way Wes created a family, I think this group of people have created a family, and it’s been quite wonderful to be a part of it.

“I can’t really talk about it without giving stuff away, but I did go down a road that has never been gone down before, I think… No, that’s not true. Nevermind. That’s a lie! It’s Scream 7. I did everything I could to make it feel new and fresh, so we’ll see what happens.”

Williamson Faces a Challenge with ‘Scream 7’

There’s no question that theScreamfan base remains divided after the debacle of Melissa Barrera’s firing and Jenna Ortega’s decision to leave the franchise. The backlash even caused the first director toabandon the project. Today, nearly every update aboutScream 7is met with strongly divided reactions on social media, representing Williamson’s greatest challenge. It won’t be easy to make a film that can satisfy everyone.

The Sidney Prescott factor will play a major role. The return ofScream’s most beloved character is Williamson’s most powerful card, and the main reason why he decided to jump on board. The director shared the details of how he was asked to join the movie, and, of course, the call involved Sidney herself, Neve Campbell:

“It was a Zoom, so she got to see me cry. No, it was lovely. She called with the studio, and she wanted to be the one to ask me to do it. I think somehow there were all the conversations that were had without me, and then they Zoomed me and asked me, and it was awesome.”
