As Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe unfolded, one character who left a lasting impression is Shang-Chi, portrayed bySimu LiuinShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While Liu’s portrayal was well-received, audiences were left wondering where Shang-Chi will make his next onscreen appearance within the expansive MCU. In an interview withMen’s Health, Simu Liu touched on the possibility of his involvement inAvengers: The Kang Dynasty. While remaining cautious due to the ever-evolving nature of the industry, Liu expressed confidence, stating that he is “pretty sure” he will have a role in the film.
However, he emphasized the unpredictable nature of filmmaking, particularly within the Marvel realm, where scenes can be reshot, elements added during post-production, and scripts retooled. Liu also expressed his excitement for the opportunity to explore other projects, such as his involvement in Greta Gerwig’sBarbie alongsideMargot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which allows him to showcase his versatility as an artist. He said:
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be in it too. Beyond that, I really don’t know, and I don’t want to know before it’s absolutely ready. If there’s anything I’ve learned in this industry, especially with Marvel, it’s that things are changing, always in flux, and you really can’t be sure that something is going to happen until you’re on set and you’re about to do the scene. Even then, scenes get reshot, things get retooled, elements get added in post-production with visual effects and everything. So in between, it’s been a really fulfilling journey for me to get to do projects like Barbie—which are separate from that identity of Shang-Chi—and to really get to spread my wings as an artist. But if and when that call comes in… of course, a sequel is going to happen. Of course, Kang Dynasty is going to happen. When that call comes, I will happily show up, read whatever I need to read, do whatever I need to prepare. But until then, I think the less I know the better.”

Why Shang-Chi 2 Might Face a Delay in Its Release
Simu Liu previously expressed his eagerness to collaborate with other Marvel characters in the future. In an interview, Liu shared his immense admiration for both the characters and the actors who bring them to life on the big screen. He sees any potential collaboration as an opportunity to work alongside individuals who are continuously pushing boundaries and operating at the pinnacle of their abilities. “I’m such a big fan of both the characters and the performers that play them, so any collaboration is an opportunity for me to work alongside someone who, in their own way, is breaking barriers and at the very top of their game,” Liu shared. “I think that’s what excites me the most as a performer, [and] also as a fan.” He added, “And who knows, they might see something sooner than you think …. We’ll see.”
Unfortunately,Liu recently provided a disappointing updatethrough the social media app Threads. He revealed that the planned sequel, which was initially set to follow theAvengers, might be delayed due to circumstances beyond his control. Despite this setback, Liu remains hopeful that concrete news about the sequel will be forthcoming in the near future.
“Was told it would follow Avengers but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control :( hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”
