Comic-Con 2016 will come to a close later today, but not before the return of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson! Sunday kicked off in Hall H with theSherlockpanel, where the first trailer for Season 4 was revealed by starBenedict Cumberbatchand the show’s producers. They still haven’t announced exactly when the new season will debut, but these new episodes are coming on the heels of the successfulholiday special,The Abominable Bride.
Sherlock: The Abominable Bridewas the most watched program over the holiday season with 11.6 million viewers and the highest-ever audience share for aSherlock episode. The special, which transported Holmes and Watson to Victorian Era England, was also released in thousands of theaters around the world to complement the TV broadcast. This trailer, which debuted onYouTubeshortly after the panel, reveals that Holmes and Watson have come back to present day.
Promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases, it was announced in April, whenproduction began, that season four will begin with the nation’s favorite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge - becoming parents for the first time. It was also recently announced thatToby Joneshas joined the cast for the second episode in this new season, which will consist of three 90-minute episodes.
The first of the threefeature-length episodeswill be directed byRachel Talalay, who has worked as a director, producer, and professor in film and television for more than 25 years, having previously directedDoctor Who,The FlashandThe Wind in the Willows.Nick Hurranwill direct the second episode, and executive producerMark Gatissrevealed during the panel that there are just two weeks left of production on Season 4, with a major scene set to be filmed on Tuesday.
