The new CBS seriesStar Trek Discoveryis one of those projects that is slowly starting to reveal itself in bits and pieces. We’ve seen a fewSTD teasers, and the upcoming sci-fi adventure drama had a big presence at Comic-Con. Today, we learn who the main protagonist will be and what her name is. And it’s not what you might expect at all.
The lead character inStar Trek Discoverywill not be a Starfleet Captain. Instead, it will be a human female officer. AndAint It Cool Newsreveals that her name is Number One.ShowrunnerBryan Fuller confirmed this information during a radio chat on Saturday.
Other new information revealed about the show includes the fact that the first season will feature 13 episodes, and is the shortest live-action season ofStar Trekever produced. It is set to air the pilot episode on CBS this January, before the entire show moves to the Network’s streaming service as an exclusive series that can only be watched there.
Bryan Fuller says that he would prefer to only do 10 episodes a season, and that’s how future seasons of the show might play out. Fuller co-wrote the pilot withStar Trek Into Darknessscreenwriter Alex Kurtzman. The second episode has now been revealed to be written by Nicholas Meyer, who is responsible forStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, andStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Fuller also dropped the exciting news that he will be joined by co-showrunners Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts, a writing team that is known for working with Fuller onWonderfallsandPushing Daisies. Other new writers who have joined theStar Trek Discoverywriting staff include Jesse Alexander (Alias, Heroes, Hannibal) and author/playwright Kemp Powers (The Shooting, One Night in Miami}.
Further on in the chat, it was hinted thatStar Trek Discoverymight be the firstStar Trek TV seriesnot to usetime travel. At this time, the sci-fi series does not have an official launch date. No other casting has been made at this time.
