Way back in March, months beforeSuicide Squadhit theaters, a report surfaced that claimed Warner Bros. was already preppingSuicide Squad 2, withWill Smithand directorDavid Ayerbeing eyed to return, with filming being eyed to start in early 2017. WhileSuicide Squadfared well at the box office, earning $325.1 million domestically and $745.6 million worldwide, from a $175 million budget, the film was blasted by the critics, with just a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Today we have an update fromJai Courtney, who revealed that he isn’t quite sure ifSuicide Squad 2is actually happening or not.
DirectorDavid Ayerteased this summer that he has already started to hammer out a story line forSuicide Squad 2, but he wouldn’t divulge any of those details quite yet.We Got This Coveredcaught up withJai Courtney, who playedCaptain BoomeranginSuicide Squad, who stated that he isn’t sure what’s happening with the sequel quite yet, but he would love to reprise his role as Boomerang. Here’s what he had to say below.
“Listen, they keep their cards very close to their chest. I actually have no idea, I pray the answer is yes. I certainly don’t feel like I’m done with that character. I had a lot of fun playing him, and I don’t feel like anyone is done with that franchise, certainly not yet. So, I hope so, sooner or later. The studio is very busy at the moment, directorDavid Ayeris directing something else at the moment, but I’m sure they have plans, just none that they’ve shared with me.”
Aside fromSuicide Squad 2, there have also been rumors of spin-offs for bothThe Joker(Jared Leto) and Captain Boomerang, but Warner Bros. hasn’t made those plans official quite yet. The studio did confirm that it is developing a Harley Quinn spin-off, withMargot Robbiereprising her role fromSuicide Squadin a movie that will also feature female DC characters such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.Margot Robbiewill also executive produce that project through her first-look deal with Warner Bros., but a writer and director haven’t been set at this time.
Another report surfaced in April that thisSuicide Squadsequel will beR-rated, following the success ofDeadpool, 20th Century Fox’s R-rated superhero blockbuster.Deadpoolactually out-grossedSuicide Squadboth domestically and globally, even with a more restrictive rating. Even ifSuicide Squad 2does move forward at some point in the near future, it remains to be seen whether or not Warner Bros. will allow it to be R-rated.
InSuicide Squad, when Midway City is threatened by a powerful mystical enemy, Amanda Waller’s plan to unite the baddest of the bad gets the go-ahead. She cuts deals with a whole squad of prisoners:Deadshot(Will Smith) gets his Second Amendment rights reinstated, Harley (Margot Robbie) is set free from her cage, Diablo (Jay Hernandez) steps out of his fireproof prison, Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Slipknot (Adam Beach) each get to wield their signature weapons once more, and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) emerges from the swamp. The only condition is this: Obey orders or die. This is strictly enforced by squad leader Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), the samurai Katana (Karen Fukuhara), and of course the explosive devices - developed by Wayne Enterprises - inserted into their necks. However, the arrival of the tatted-up Gotham City mega-criminal, the Joker (Jared Leto), might doom the mission thanks to his plan to reunite with his true love, Harley. Hopefully we’ll hear Squad 2in the very near future.
