WhileBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicepulled in $330.3 million domestic and $873.2 million worldwide, it was still trashed by critics (27% on Rotten Tomatoes), and considered by many to be a disappointment. Many DC fans had hoped that the nextDCEU moviewould turn things around. WhileSuicide Squadfared well at the box office, with $325.1 domestic and $745.6 million worldwide, it was out-grossed by the R-ratedDeadpool($363 million domestic, 782.6 million worldwide), and fared even worse with critics thanBatman v Supermanwith a 26% Rotten score. Now thatSuicide Squadhas arrived on Digital HD, with the Blu-ray and DVD arriving December 15, the movie is getting the Honest Trailer treatment, and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches.
This new Honest Trailer debuted atScreen Junkiestoday, which may seem, to some, like adding insult to injury, after taking such a critical drubbing. Still, this Honest Trailer points out that the studio only gave writer-directorDavid Ayersix weeks to write the script, while juggling numerous different cuts of the movie, restructuring the studio’s executives and reshooting the third act, while maintaining the August 5 release date they had already set. This six-minute video also points out obvious flaws in the story, such as Squad memberCara Delevingne’s Enchantress turning out to be the big villain that these “worst heroes ever” need to bring down.
This video also pokes fun atKiller Croc(Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who the narrator describes as “half crocodile, half racial stereotype,” along with El Diablo’s (Jay Hernandez) conflict within about using his firey powers andJoel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg, an “exposition machine,” who verbally lays out all of the main plot points. The narrator also tears intoCara Delevingne’s acting chops as Enchantress, the climactic “sky beam” and much more in this hilarious honest trailer. Of course, it’s not all bad, though, with the video giving some props toWill Smith,Margot RobbieandJai Courtneyfor their “great performances.”
One of the reasonsSuicide Squadwasn’t a total flop at the box office was likely because of the buzz swirling aroundJared Leto’s performance as The Joker. Unfortunately, his screen time was quite limited, with the narrator comparing his performance to a mixture ofJames FrancoinSpring BreakerswithJim Carrey’sAce Ventura, and a cat.Jared Leto’s antics on and off the set became the stuff of legend, whether it be the gifts he sent to his cast members, or his method acting ways of never breaking character, although the actor himself revealed during a Q&A that he felt tricked by the production, since the project was originally pitched very differently to him.
While nothing has been set in stone quite yet, there has been talk that Warner Bros. may move forward withSuicide Squad 2, with some rumors claiming tht it may beR-rated, following the sucess ofDeadpool. DirectorDavid Ayerand starWill Smithare currently filming a new sci-fi feature entitledBrightfor Netflix, but there hasn’t been any confirmation thatSuicide Squad 2has been given the green light.
