Having been on release for less than a week,The Super Mario Bros. Moviehas another several weeks to run at the box office, and that means it is currently looking at a total box office that could make it hard to beat as the highest grossing movie of the year. Where Will The Super Mario Bros. Franchise Go Next?

Despite initialfears over howThe Super Mario Bros. Moviewould be received, there was seemingly nothing to worry about. That means that the attention is already turning to a sequel and potential Nintendo universe coming in the near future. For their part, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are more than down tocontinue voicing the characters of Mario and Luigirespectively. After Pratt previously said in an interview that he would love to return to the role again, Day added:

“It’s so fun to be part of this world and just people love these characters so much. I mean, I would love to keep doing it and Luigi has got a whole mansion he can wander around and be scared in. But I don’t know, I think I’d do as many as they wanted me to do.”

As well as the inevitable sequel, there are plenty of opportunities for other characters from the movie to get their time to shine in their own projects. From Donkey Kong toBowser, and characters yet to be seen such as Wario, there is a whole world of potential in Nintendo’s hands and it is unlikely they are going to let it go to waste after getting off to such a lucrative start withThe Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film already includes sequel setups with both mid-credits and post-credits scenes, and it is likely that it will not be long before plans for a whole new wave of Mario related projects are revealed.
