Two wildly different movies will be getting stage musical adaptations in the near future, with a Broadway version of the 1993 comedy classicGroundhog Daybeing developed, while Disney Parks is making aTangledmusical for their Disney Cruise Lines. TheGroundhog Daymusical is being developed by composer-lyricistTim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and set and costume designerRob Howell, the team behind the current Broadway adaptation of the 1996 movieMatilda. They will all collaborate on the play’s book with Danny Rubin, who came up with the originalGroundhog Daystory and co-wrote the screenplay with directorHarold Ramis.
Scott Rudinwill produce the play with Andre Ptaszysnki’s Whistle Pig Productions and Columbia Stage Live. The original movie centered on a weatherman (Bill Murray) who is assigned to cover the Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where he gets caught in a time loop and is forced to re-live the same day over and over again.Andie MacDowell,Chris Elliott,Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray and Marita Geraghty co-starred in the comedy classic.
TheTangledmusical will debut on the Disney Magic cruise ship on November 11 during a four-night cruise to the Bahamas. The stage musical will include brand new songs from composerAlan Menken.
