Despite Mixed Reviews ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ Does One Thing Better Than ‘The Hobbit’

Discover how ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War’ of the Rohirrim eclipses the standalone storytelling of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.

What Went Wrong with ‘The War of Rohirrim?’

With just a 48% rating from critics onRotten Tomatoes, and an 82% from fans, there’s a clear divide as to how people felt about the film. While many praised the animation style and music featured in the movie, others thought the plot lacked coherence, making it feel likeThe War of Rohirrimwas a chore to sit through. MovieWeb’s own Julian Romansaid in his reviewthat it “will delight the Tolkien faithful, but suffers from the same narrative flaws that bedevil the modern film adaptations.”

Unfortunately, there were too many cooks in the kitchen with this one, with a total of four writers being credited on the script, which was based on details found in the appendices of Tolkien’s original novel. As such,The War of Rohirrimfelt disjointed at times, like it could never really figure out what it wanted to be. That’s mainly due in part to the fact the film was rushed into production to prevent New Line Cinema from losing the film adaptation rights to Tolkien’s novels, which would have been a major blow to the company. Perhaps a little more foresight and planning could have saved things, but alas, we’ll never know.
