The Chemical Attack Was a Means to an End

Despite the cascading and seemingly complicated events of the second season, by the end of it all, the through line becomes rather simple. Noor Taheri (Arienne Mandi),the Iranian nationalwho works at the Iranian Mission, is responsible for leading Peter and Rose to Solomon Vega (Berto Colon) and his boss, Jacob, which is the catalyst for how they’re finally able to connect the dots.As an illegal dealer of intelligence, Jacob sold classified French intelligence to Iran and Noor watched Solomon facilitate the entire thing.

However, that sale was merely one transaction for Jacob, who sells all kinds of national secrets from various countries to just about anyone who’s looking to purchase such sensitive information. Peter picks up his scent whenSolomon kills Alice in Bangkokafter she and Peter witness one of his sales. Unfortunately, Peter’s investigation eventually runs dry. Only after Noor helps them are they finally able to identify Solomon and connect him to Jacob. Subsequently,Peter and the others learn Jacob sold information regarding a biological weapons program known as Foxglove, which now means the race is on to thwart an imminent chemical attack.

After procuring documents detailing Foxglove,Viktor Bala (Dikran Tulaine), a deposed dictator locked away at The Hague, enlists his son, Tomás (Rob Heaps), and nephew, Markus (Michael Malarkey) to avenge his imprisonment by unleashing KX, one of the Foxglove weapons, during the General Assembly at the UN. It turns out the United States originally sold Foxglove weapons Viktor, which he’s been claiming for years, butthe U.S. denied such accusations. The country was ultimately cleared by the UN, so only Viktor was sent to prison. Now he aims to hold the U.S. responsible for their lies. After purchasing Foxglove information from Jacob and successfully commissioning KX’s production, Viktor’s plan nearly comes to fruition. Thankfully, Peter and Rose are able to intercept the chemical weapon and prevent the attack in the nick of time.

However, it turns out the KX attack was merely a chaotic means to an end.Swaying the election for control of the White House was the real goal. After playing the long game for eight years, Jacob sells information to presidential candidate Governor Richard Hagan (Ward Horton), who leaks a recording that connects his opponent, former CIA Director Patrick Knox (Geoffrey Owens), to Foxglove and its sale to Viktor. In light of the damning information, Knox drops out of the presidential race, essentially handing over the electionto Hagan. Jacob might appear to be a simple broker of intelligence, but he certainly had his own agenda the whole time.
