Movieis sure to be the go-to movie for families over the Easter weekend which, according to a report byDeadline, could lead to the project garnering the biggest box office openings of the year.

As per the report, these numbers look like “that’s $125M+ in U.S./Canada in 4,000 theaters over Wednesday through Sunday, and another $100M+ abroad.” The divisive Marvel outingAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniacurrently holds the title of biggest opening of the yearwith a gross of $225.3 million, but it’s now looking likeThe Super Mario Bros. Moviewill take that crown.

It has been 30 years since the Mario Brothers were last seen on the big screen, with fans no doubt hoping for (and thus flocking to theaters to see) something better than the 1993 live action effort starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, and based on the hugely popular video game franchise and featuring the ensemble cast of beloved Nintendo characters,The Super Mario Bros. Moviewill follow the iconic Brooklyn plumber named Marioas he travels through the Mushroom Kingdom with a princess named Peachand an anthropomorphic mushroom named Toad to find Mario’s brother, Luigi, and to save the world from a ruthless fire-breathing Koopa named Bowser.

Moviestars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike, and Charles Martinet, who voices Mario and Luigi in theMariogames, who will make several cameo appearances throughout the movie. Additionally, Khary Payton voices the Penguin King with Eric Bauza rumored to appear as Wario.

While there has been some criticism leveled against the casting ofGuardians of the Galaxystar Chris Pratt, co-director Aaron Horvathhas explained the thinking behind the choice and why the actor is perfectfor the role of the animated Mario. “For us, it made total sense. He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart,” the filmmaker explained. “For the way that Mario is characterised in our film, he’s perfect for it.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movieis scheduled for release in the United States on June 26, 2025.
