Thor: Ragnarokis currently deep into production under the direction ofTaika Waititi, the third director to tackle the franchise in just as many movies. It looks like Marvel may have finally found a right fit forThor, should the franchise continue after this installment. Apparently, things are going well and should they keep going that way, the director seems like he would be happy to return to theMarvel Cinematic Universefor another movie.
In a recent interview withDigital Spy, theHunt for the Wilderpeopledirector was asked how things were going so far withThor: Ragnarok. According toTaika Waititithey are about halfway through filming the third installment of theThorfranchise and things are going very well. Better than expected, in fact. Here is what he had to say.
“We are halfway through and it’s going really well. Everything is going to plan in that we didn’t have a plan to start with. … It’s going better than expected and it’s a lot of fun shooting. The style is not too dissimilar to how I would normally work. It’s just a longer schedule because it’s a bigger film with more special effects and things like that.”
This is the first major studio movie thatTaika Waititihas tackled. Prior toThor: Ragnarok, the director had primarily been making smaller, independent features, as well as working in television. Most notably on the HBO comedy seriesFlight of the Conchords. Marvel Studios is known for taking a director likeWaititiand giving them a shot at making a bigger movie for the first time, and they have had quite a bit of success with it so far. DirectorJames Gunnhad a great experience onGuardians of the Galaxyand returned to helm the sequel and it looks likeTaika Waititicould be heading down a similar road. While some directors have cracked under the pressure of blockbuster filmmaking, he is enjoying the experience and feels like he very well may return to theMCU. Here is what he had to say.
“If I do really well with it and people like it and I enjoy the process then I’d definitely think about doing another one.”
While we don’t have an awful lot to base it off of, we can safely say that it seems likeTaika Waititiis crushing it so far. Those of us who were lucky enough to catch Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con were treated to a sizzle reel fromThor 3which almost stole the show. The one thing that everyone has seen and pretty much everyone can agree was awesome was the video explaining what Thor was doing duringCaptain America: Civil War, whichWaititiput together. If that is any indicator, fans will surely want him to keep making MCU movies for quite some time.
As for what “another one” would be, movie-wise, that is very up in the air. AfterRagnarok, Thor and the rest of the MCU gang will be heading off to duke it out with Thanos inAvengers: Infinity War. Depending on how that all shakes out, we may not be seeing anotherThormovie for quite some time, if at all. So, ifThor: Ragnarokdoes well (which it almost certainly will) and Marvel decides they would like to bringTaika Waititiback, it could very well be for a different franchise entirely. Similar to howThe Russo Brothersmoved fromCaptain Americaover toThe Avengers. Maybe he can make that Netflix series starring Thor and Darryl that everyone wants so badly?
Thor: Ragnarokwill see the return ofChris Hemsworthas Thor,Tom Hiddlestonas Loki,Anthony Hopkinsas Odin and it will also be featuringMark Ruffaloas TheHulk/Bruce Banner, which is incredibly exciting. The franchise has also added some big name talent in the form ofJeff Goldblum, who is playing Grandmaster,Karl Urban, who will be playing the villainous Asgardian Skurge,CreedstarTessa Thompsonas Valkyrie and Oscar winnerCate Blanchettas the main villain Hela.Thor: Ragnarokis due out in theaters on July 21, 2025.
