Michael Bay, like it or not, is currently deep into production on his latest entry in theTransformersfranchise,Transformers: The Last Knight. While we have seen new looks at many of the Autobots and some behind the scenes videos, much of the story for the movie has been kept under wraps so far. However, some new set photos seemingly confirm a huge, rumored plot detail, thatThe Last Knightwill indeed have ties to King Arthur, and the fabled wizard Merlin.
The BBCrecently ran a report that actors from the movie have been spotted filming on the Scottish isle of Skye. While that isn’t all that big of a deal on its own, the photos that the report included were pretty telling. The photos show actors on horseback in traditional, medieval gear. This seems to point to, as the titleThe Last Knightsort of implies, that this movie will connect theTransformerslore to the time period of King Arthur, which has been long standing rumor that hasn’t had much evidence to support it, until now that is.
Previous entries in theTransformers franchisehave featured flashbacks to different time periods, so that is nothing totally new, but this could very well be some totally bananas, crazy type stuff, even for aTransformersmovie. While the movie will mostly take place in present day, this flashback, and possible connection to King Arthur and Merlin, could have major implications on the franchise. Rumors of these plot details surfaced a couple of months ago in a report from JoBlo. Warning, potential spoilers ahead. In case you missed it, here is exactly what the rumored plot ofTransformers: The Last Nightis going to be, according to that report.
“The story for Transformers: The Last Night will involveOptimus Primefinding his home planet,Cybertron, now a dead planet, which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring the planet back to life, but to do so, he needs to find an artifact. And of course, that artifact is on Earth. Somehow the artifact ties into Merlin, the magician of King Arthur lore. Apparently, the power of magic was given to Merlin by a Transformer and somehow the artifact ties into this.”
So yeah, this could be a pretty insane way to more deeply tie theTransformersinto world history. Paramount has already started marketing the movie, which isn’t due out until next summer. They have already released a very cool new poster, which features Optimus Prime getting ready to do battle with a three-headed robot beast (or three separate robot heads, it is a bit hard to tell). It wouldn’t be at all surprising if we get to see a trailer sometime in the near future, which may further show us this potential medieval connection to King Arthur and the magical Merlin.
The four films in theTransformersfranchise have grossed nearly $4 billion worldwide to date and are showing no signs of slowing down. Granted, the reception forAge of Extinctionwas less than favorable on the critic side of things and though it made a lot of money, fans seemed a little disappointed by it. We will have to wait and see ifThe Last Knightcan deliver theTransformersmovie fans have been waiting to see. The movie sees the return ofMark Wahlberg, as well as franchise starsJosh DuhamelandTyrese Gibson.
