You can now watch the first seven minutes of comic book movie sequelVenom: Let There Be Carnagecourtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment, who have released the opening of the bizarre rom-com action flick in the hopes of enticing you to purchase it in its entirety when the Sony/Marvel outing is released on Blu-ray next month. Focusing on serial killer Cletus Kasady in his youth as he is transferred from the St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children to the Ravencroft Institute, the clip then reintroduces us to Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and his warped relationship with the extra-terrestrial symbiote known as Venom.
Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one ofMarvel’sgreatest and most complex characters. Picking up over a year after the events ofVenom(2018), investigative journalist Eddie Brock struggles to adjust to life as the host of the alien symbiote Venom, which grants him super-human abilities to be a lethal vigilante. Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.
Directed by Andy Serkis, written by Kelly Marcel with the story byTom Hardy& Marcel,Venom: Let There Be Carnagealso stars Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, and Woody Harrelson, in the role of the villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage. Whether or not releasing the opening of the sequel leaves you wanting more likely depends largely on how you felt about the first Venom, which suffered from a critical mauling but went on to make over $856 million worldwide. Similarly,Venom: Let There Be Carnagealso saw much financial success (if not so much critical, although it is considered to be an improvement on its predecessor), raking in over $455 million worldwide and thus making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2021.
This bodes well for Sony and Tom Hardy’s aspirations for the franchise, with the latterrevealing plans for a Venom-Verse, which will at first rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe before hopefully being folded into it. “Yeah, it’s really hard because for me and the guys in the Venom-verse, we came together under Sony and that’s who we work for, that’s who we run with, that’s our team, you know?” Hardy explained. “And obviously we just look at it as creatives and say, “Look at all of these things we could play with.” But we really have to establish ourselves as somebody that maybe they want to play with. Maybe somebody that belongs in that world first. And do you like what we represent as Venom? Is this established?”
To the delight of Marvel fans,Venom: Let There Be Carnage’spost-credits scenerevealed that the multiversal madness has already begun, with Eddie Brock and Venom transported into the MCU and seeing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on television. “There was a lot of coordination - and if you don’t know all the coordination yet, I’m not going to be the one to tell you - but yes, between Sony and Marvel and the Venom team and the No Way Home team,” Marvel boss Kevin Feige has since revealed.Venom: Let There Be Carnageis due for release on Blu-ray in time for the Holidays on December 14.
