We are still waiting to get an official look at Jenna Ortega in character as Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’sWednesday, but a page from the script that’s been released does a pretty good job of setting the tone. In development at Netflix,Wednesdaymarks the directorial debut for Burton on the small screen. In some ways, it comes full circle for the director who had previously passed on directing the hit movie adaptation ofThe Addams Familyfrom 1991.
The cast and crew are hard at work onWednesday, and to tease the upcoming show, Netflix has released a single page from the script first published atEW. In the page, which you can read in full below, the scene is set up at Nancy Reagan High School. Thetitular character, whose wit is described as “still sharper than razor wire” with puberty having “amplified her uniquely warped worldview,” stumbles across trouble when she finds a boy stuffed into one of the school’s lockers.

Of course, this would be Wednesday’s younger brother Pugsley, who always seems to find himself in these kinds of situations. For her part, Wednesday doesn’t outwardly show her emotions, but it’s clear she’s looking to get even with whoever it was that messed with an Addams. “I want names,” Wednesday tells her brother, encouraging him to pull it together by adding “emotion equals weakness.”
We’ll have to wait for the series to be released to see how exactly Wednesday handles this situation. It’s not clear where this scene will fit into the overall narrative, which is said to explore Wednesday’s life at college after moving out of the family mansion. Perhaps it will be an earlier scene to help set up the story near the beginning of the first episode prior to Wednesday heading to Nevermore Academy.
“She’s the smartest person in the room, but she doesn’t like emotion,” says Al Gough, who co-created the series with Miles Millar.
“There’s a supernatural murder mystery,” Millar adds, teasing the creative direction ofWednesday. “There’s the teen relationships. There’s the adult relationships. And all under the prism of Tim Burton.”
Along with Jenna Ortega in the lead, the cast includesCatherine Zeta-Jones as Morticiaand Luis Guzman as Gomez. Other characters featured are Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel and Oates,Another Period) as Wednesday’s therapist Dr. Valerie Kinbott; Jamie McShane (Sons of Anarchy,CSI: Vegas) as Sheriff Donovan Galpin; Hunter Doohan (Your Honor) as Wednesday’s friend Tyler Galpin, the sheriff’s son; Georgie Farmer (Evermoor) as shy student Ajax Petropolus; Moosa Mostafa (Nativity Rocks!) as beekeeping club president Eugene Otinger; Emma Myers (Girl in the Basement) as Wednesday’s roommate Enid Sinclair; Naomi J. Ogawa (Skylines) as vampire Yoko Tanaka; Joy Sunday (MacGyver) as popular girl Bianca Barclay; and Percy Hynes White (The Gifted) as artist and rich kid Xavier Thorpe.
Wednesdaydoesn’t yet have a release date, but the show will debut on Netflix sometime in 2022. Let’s hope some photos or even some footage will soon be coming now that more teases oftheAddams Familyreboot seriesare coming in.
