What Is Happening with the Tetris Movie Trilogy?

When crafted in just the right way, nostalgia for beloved properties can translate into big bucks at the box office. Properties that originated in the 1980s likeTransformersandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtleshave been resurrected with great success, but last month, we revealed that plans for aTetrismovie have expanded into a full trilogy, with production set to begin at the beginning of next year. ProducerLarry Kasanoffrecently shed some light on this project, teasing that the story they have come up with demands amovie trilogy.

We first reported on aTetris movieback in 2014, whenLarry Kasanoff’s Threshold Entertainment teamed up with The Tetris Group for a movie adaptation. Even then, he teased how “epic” the story would be, but our report from last month was the first we heard about aTetristrilogy.Empirerecently caught up withLarry Kasanoff, who teased that the movies won’t feature random blocks “running around.”

“That’s correct, and purely because the story we conceived is so big. This isn’t us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It’s just a big story. We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie, but it’s great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!”

Last month’s report revealed thatLarry Kasanoffis teaming with Chinese media mogulBruno Wuto bring thisvideo gameto life, with the producers eyeing an $80 million budget. No screenwriter or director has been announced yet, but casting is currently under way. Here’s whatLarry Kasanoffhad to say, teasing that no one has guessed what they’re trying to do yet.

“We want the story to be a surprise, but it’s a bigscience-fictionmovie. I came up with the idea as I was thinking aboutTetrisand the theme of creating order out of chaos. I guarantee you it’s not what you think. No-one has come remotely close to figuring out what we’re doing.”

Regardless of what the story may be,Tetriscould be moving forward at just the right time. Earlier this month,Warcraftbecame the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, despite severely underperforming domestically while bringing in big bucks internationally. Later this year, another high-profile video game adaptation,Assassin’s Creedwill hit theaters, starringMichael Fassbender.
