Will Earth’s greatest heroes finally learn that their former mentor and friendAgent Coulsonis still alive and well and working for S.H.I.E.L.D. whenInfinity Waropens this April? It’s been almost six years since Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) was surprisingly killed by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) inMarvel’s Avengers, a pivotal event which united theAvengersand lead to their ultimate victory. While fans have known for years that Coulson is actually alive, as seen on ABC’sAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., none of the actualAvengersknow that, but it seems that will change very soon. During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb revealed that theAvengerswill ultimately learn about Coulson’s ruse, although when that will happen is uncertain.

“It’s certainly something that will get resolved, and it may get resolved in a very surprising way.”

Now thatAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.has switched to Friday nights, it’s possible that there could be a crossover brewing in upcoming episodes that will tie intoAvengers: Infinity War, which was recently pushed from May 4 to April 27. Tonight marks the 12th episode this season, entitled The Real Deal, which is also the show’s landmark 100th episode, and if the show continues its run without any breaks in between, the show will air its 19th episode this season on April 27. This “surprising way” Jeph Loeb teased could very well be during anAvengers 3post-credit scene, but naturally that has yet to be confirmed. Clark Gregg was also asked about being reunited with theAvengers, although he didn’t offer many specifics.

“When they feel like it’s time to start connecting any of these worlds, they will. I feel like I’ll hear from them then, but in the meantime, I have my hands full trying to do a good job on (S.H.I.E.L.D.)”

In this current fifth season ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it has been recently revealed that Coulson is actually dying, although his potential cause of death remains unknown, with answers expected in tonight’s 100th episode. Coulson is expected to reveal the details of his deal withGhost Rider(Gabriel Luna) in Season 4. The show has remained “on the bubble” for being renewed for a sixth season, with the show’s executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell recently revealing that they’re writing the Season 5 finale as a series finale, in case the show isn’t renewed for Season 6, although there will still be story opportunities to explore if the show is picked up.

WhileAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, crossovers between the movie universe and this TV series have been few and far between. Towards the end of the first season, the events ofCaptain America: Civil Wardrastically changed things for the show, when it was revealed that Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. long ago, with the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. forcing Coulson and his agents to go underground. While the agency has been legitimized on the show once again, it hasn’t been addressed on the movie side yet, although some speculate that may happen in this summer’sAnt-Man and the Wasp, since Randall Park was confirmed as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo.Entertainment Weeklybroke this news earlier today, although we’ll have to wait and see when and if theAvengerswill finally learn the truth about Coulson.
