While we still have several months left untilGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2hits theaters on Aug 26, 2025, some fans are already looking ahead toGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. During the Toronto International Film Festival,Guardians 2starKurt Russell, who plays Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father, Ego the Living Planet, hinted in an interview that he may not be sticking around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we don’t know for sure if he signed a multi-picture deal with Marvel, like most actors do, the legendary actor said that he isn’t sure how he fits into the overall MCU.

While most fans assumed thatKurt Russellwas playingStar-Lord’s dad, no one imagined that would be confirmed in the Comic-Con footage, where it was revealed that he is playing Ego the Living Planet.Fandangocaught up withKurt Russellat the Toronto International Film Festival, where he admitted that he doesn’t know if Ego will be back forGuardians 3. Here’s what he had to say below.

“What you’d have to do is put your mind to it…You have to sit down and say, these are my issues - these are my questions. I’m an audience too. We all run into our own integrity no matter what, as much as I hate to admit it. I need to find a way that this is going to grow and be fun and most of all for me it needs to be fun to find as we go along. Right now I got part of it (Marvel Cinematic Universe)- we have to see. I don’t know. I don’t know if I fit into that mold.”

Marvel Studios PresidentKevin Feigeconfirmed in April thatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will be part ofMarvel Phase 4, but no plans for the production or the release have been set in stone. Marvel has set release dates for the first three Marvel Phase 4 movies, which will arrive on July 20, 2025, July 22, 2025 and July 20, 2025, but the movies themselves have yet to be confirmed. WhileKurt Russellwouldn’t say much about how Ego fits into the story, he did offer a hint about Ego and Star-Lord’s father-son dynamic.

“Kids always put their parents on a pedestal. Well, what happens when they don’t turn out to be the people you want them to be?”

Kurt Russellalso had plenty of praise for directorJames Gunn, who recently said that he isn’t sure if he will directGuardians 3quite yet. Still, the earliest we would seeGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3would be in 2020, so there is still plenty of time for the director to decide if he will return or not.
