James Gunn has offered an interesting update about theWonder Womanreboot. Two years following James Gunn’s initial DCU slate announcement, the co-president of DC Studios finally confirmed that aWonder Woman solo film was in development. This was certainly good news for fans of the character as Patty Jenkins’Wonder Woman 3, the final chapter in his planned trilogy, was canceled shortly after Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed heads of the DCU.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, James Gunn was asked about the prospect of rebooting Wonder Woman. Gunn did not provide any specific plot details or the direction they are aiming for, since it appears the movie is still in the early stages of development. However, the DC Studios co-president does think he will have an easier time with Wonder Woman since the character has not been adapted into film as many times as Superman and Batman, who have been the stars of multiple films, television series, and comics. Gunn said:

“Wonder Woman I think is actually easier for me, because there haven’t been so many infinite portrayals of Wonder Woman — definitely not in movies, but really anywhere — that there have been of Batman. Every single Batman story has been told. It seems like half the comics that have come out of DC over the past 30 years have Batman in them. He’s the most famous superhero in the world and the most popular superhero in the world. And people love him because he’s interesting, but also having so much of him out there can also make him boring. So how do you create that property that’s fun to watch.”
The Untapped Potential of Wonder Woman
Despite being the third most popular character in DC Comics, next to Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman had a more difficult time on screen than her male counterparts. She was the star of her own popular television series in the late 1970s, airing when the Christopher ReeveSupermanmovies were out, but a feature film version of the character had languished in development hell since 1996.Green Lantern,Jonah Hex,Catwoman,The Losers, andSuicide Squadall made it to the big screen before Wonder Woman did in 2017.She has also never had an animated series of her own.
Who Will Be the DCU’s New Wonder Woman? The 10 Best Actresses for the Job
With the DCU in need of a new Wonder Woman, here are the top 10 picks to take over the superhero role from Gal Gadot.
Despite aWonder Womansolo film not being part of Gunn’s initial DCU slate, it appears he does have big plans for the character.Creature Commandosteased the Amazons and also featured Wonder Woman villain Circe. What was announced in that initial slate wasParadise Lost, a prequel to Wonder Woman’s birththat would have focused on the history of the Amazons. Gunn seems to have some larger history for Wonder Woman and the Amazons that will be key to the franchise’s larger story.

As great as Patty Jenkins' 2017Wonder Womanfilm was, it and itsless well-received sequelbarely scratched the surface of the Wonder Woman comics. Between villains like Giganta, Doctor Cyber, and Doctor Psycho and supporting characters like Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark, and Yara Flor, there are plenty of potential exciting stories to adapt to the big screen. From Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang’s Terminator-inspired story of Diana protecting the unborn child of Zeus from the Greek Pantheon to Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp’s critically acclaimed “The Lies”, there is plenty of great material to draw from that would make for a great new Wonder Woman film.
