Next year, Sony Pictures Animation will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its animated hitSurf’s Up. What better way to kick off the celebration than with the release of a brand new sequel,Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania. Earlier today, Sony and WWE Studios debuted the brand new trailer for this animated sequel, offering our first look at The Hang 5.
Cody Maverick, hungry for a new challenge, convinces an infamousbig waveriding crew known as The Hang 5, voiced by WWE SuperstarsJohn Cena,The Undertaker,Triple H, WWE DivaPaigeandMr. McMahon, to let him join them on their journey to a mysterious surf spot known as The Trenches, where legend has it, they’ll find the biggest waves in the world. Cody soon discovers that the life he left behind might be more heroic than what any death-defying wave has to offer.Surf’s Up 2: WaveManiawill be released bySony Pictures Animationand Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in early 2017.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s protégéHenry Yu(story artist onSym-Bionic Titanand bothHotel Transylvaniafeature films) makes his directorial debut with this project, which is produced byMichelle Wong(production manager onHotel Transylvania 2) and features computer animation from Rainmaker Entertainment Inc.Abdul Williams(Lottery Ticket) is writing the screenplay.Surf’s Up 2: WaveManiawill be distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment with WWE Studios providing marketing support by leveraging its extensive multi-platform reach.
The originalSurf’s Upfeatured an all-star voice cast lead byShia LaBeouf,Jeff Bridges,Zooey Deschanel,Jon Heder,James Woods,Diedrich Bader,Mario Cantoneand real-life surfing legendKelly Slater. Aside from these new characters voiced by WWE Superstars, no other voice cast members have been announced, so we’re not sure if any of the originalSurf’s Upstars will reprise their roles.Surf’s Up, which was directed byGeorge Miller, took in $58.8 million domestically and $149 million worldwide during its theatrical run back in 2007.
