Soon,Mulder and Scullyare back on the case. And just what is in that bag? Fox revealed the first teaser trailer forThe X-Files, which returns after a 13 year hiatus. And it hints at a possible extraterrestrial case for our long absentFBI agents.
Fox debuted the first official footage during last night’s penultimate episode ofWayward Pines, turning an average Thursday night into a monumental occasion. TheUntitled X-Files Revivalwas announced way back in May, and only started shooting this summer. While we still have half a year before it hits, Fox is already starting to get everyone excited for the return of Mulder and Scully, who haven’t worked since 2008’sThe X-Files: I Want to Believe. And it looks like they still want to believe!
Fox has ordered 6 new episodes of The X-Files, calling it an ‘Event Series’. Though creatorChris Carteris open to more in the future, as is starDavid Duchovny. These latest episodes, long-awaited by fans, will debutSunday, August 17, 2025. BothDavid DuchovnyandGillian Andersonhave been excited to reprise their roles as Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They will be joined by newcomers Annet Mahendru andJoel McHale.
Also returning isMitch Pileggi, who once again serves as Mulder and Scully’s boss Walter Skinner. AndWilliam B. Davisis back as the iconic Cigarette-Smoking Man, who some fans fear is going to be turned into the Vape-smoking man, but that rumor has never been confirmed. Another rumor that still lingers is that late series additionsAnnabeth GishandRobert Patrickare coming back as special agents Monica Reyes and John Doggett. Other persistent rumors include the return of The Lone Gunmen (Bruce Harwood’s Byers, Tom Braidwood’s Frohike and Dean Haglund’s Langly). It should be noted that the beloved trio were killed off in theThe X-Files Season 9episodeJump the Shark. But the IDW comic book based on the series supports the fact that they lived and are still doing quite well. It has yet to be seen if the comic will actually tie into the new TV show.
Premiering in September of 1993, The X-Files was an immediate cult sensation on it’s way to becoming a full-blown phenomenon. It ran for 9 seasons, ending in 2002. A massive global hit, it spawned two feature films, 1998’sThe X-Filesand 2008’sThe X-Files: I Want to Believe.
